Color Your Life: A Guide to Wearing Spring and Summer Colors With Confidence

Bring the heat! As the degrees climb, summer colors are making their way back into fashion.

This time of year is filled with bright, catchy, and bold color palettes, and for good reason. When is a better season to rock such statement colors if it’s not in the sunshine?

But we get it, sometimes these colors can appear intimidating, especially if you don’t normally go for the summer colors that make a statement just by existing. That’s why you have this handy guide to help you face your fears and make the best style choices while stepping outside of your comfort zone.

Here is everything you need to know about styling summer colors so that you can wear them with attitude and confidence.

What Are the Summer Colors?

The first step to getting stylish is to know what the summer colors are. You can assume that they’ll be on the warmer, brighter end of the color spectrum, but let’s get specific.

We’re not just talking about red, orange, yellow, and pink here! In fact, even cool colors like green, blue, and purple can be spring and summer colors if you find the right shade.

Let’s talk about what those colors look like. Warmer colors will have a more vivid tone compared to fall and winter colors.

Instead of shades of red and orange that look more muted, neutral, and closer to brown, summer warm colors will pop. Think rocket popsicle red, coral pink, and orange like the fruit, not like the pumpkin.

This is the same for shades of blue and green as well. Brighter shades of blue and green are along the lines of teal and aqua.

However, if you work with cool colors in a more pastel shaded palette, you could also end up with some beautiful spring colors as well. These look like mint green, baby blue, and lavender purple.

A good rule of thumb is to pastel any color to make it a spring color, and then add some saturation to turn it into a summer color!

How Do I Match These Colors?

The next question is how to style these colors together.

When it comes to fashion, it’s safe to say that less is more unless you want to really make a statement. That being said, unless you’re going for wearing the whole rainbow in your outfit (which is not a bad thing!), it’s best to keep it to 2-3 colors.

In matching these colors you can play around more.

A good way to do this is through understanding a little bit of color theory. Don’t worry, it’s easy: you take the color you want to match and locate it on a color wheel.

Then you find its complementary color (the color right across from it). After you have the complementary color, look for the colors adjacent to that complementary color and those are two colors that will match and help your outfit pop.

If that feels like a big step, you can also go for a monochrome look, layering your base color with different shades of that same color. You can also just add white, as white is the black of summer colors!

Also make sure to take patterns into account. They’re not colors, but they make a big difference when outfits clash.

If you have a dominant pattern on an article of clothing that you’re wearing, try and keep it to that rather than trying to introduce another one to your outfit.

What to Wear When?

This is a small but important step. Recognizing when to wear something is key in helping you feel excited about wearing it, especially if you’re wearing something you wouldn’t normally wear.

Make sure you know if whatever event or outing you’re attending is supposed to be dressy, casual, or business in style. Once you know, you can grab your best bright blouse to your work brunch outing or your vivid tank top to go biking to the beach, and feel confident and comfortable.

This applies for checking the weather, too! There’s no outfit ruiner like rain, or nothing more uncomfortable than being too hot or cold because of what you’re wearing.

How Do I Accessorize?

In the summer, accessories can either glitz in the sun, or weigh you down, so it’s good to put some extra thought into them.

Simple necklaces won’t cause awkward tan lines and can be just enough to pull an outfit together. You can also choose to make the statement with bigger earrings, since those won’t really cause tan lines either!

It’s also helpful to think about useful accessories, like sunglasses, which often come in fun styles and summer colors. A pair of sunglasses to tie your outfit together whether they’re on your head or covering your eyes can be just what you’re looking for.

And while we’re talking sun protection, you can always grab a hat to add some flair. Whether it’s a simple and easy going dad hat or a big and beautiful floppy sombrero, these can add that “something” you feel you’re missing in your outfit.

When Do I Know It’s Right?

Finally, the moment of truth: checking yourself out.

When flaunting summer colors and having never done so before, it may feel weird and you might not know if it’s “right” or not. That’s ok!

If you think something’s off, you can consult a general outfit guide, or look to your favorite model or celeb for inspiration. But here’s the real secret: confidence.

That’s right – confidence. Looking at yourself in the mirror and telling yourself that you look good until you believe it in your heart is what is going to get you looking fantastic, regardless of what you’re wearing.

So go out and rock that coral, because you deserve to. After all, you’ve followed all of these steps and done the work, now it’s time to feel great.

Lookin’ Good!

Summer awaits you, so go out and embrace her in your bold and beautiful summer colors!
