For Ladies Only: 8 Easy Do’s and Don’ts of Fashion

Fashion makes a statement about who you are. You want to be able to present yourself as a reliable, responsible person.

Or, maybe you don’t. Maybe you want the world to know that you’re a free spirit, always down for an adventure.

The point is, clothing becomes an expression of self. No matter how you want to present yourself to the world, make sure you follow these fashion do’s and don’ts.

1. Don’t: Let Your Underwear Show

Unless you’re a superhero and this is what you’re going for, it’s generally a good idea to keep your underwear a mystery.

Are you a thong person? Well, if the lines on your granny panties are showing through your leggings, the mystery is gone.

And that hot pink bra is a lot less cute when the public can see it through a sheer t-shirt.

When you go out, make sure that your clothes don’t reveal too much of your personal choices. Check to make sure your leggings don’t have panty lines, and that your underwear and bra isn’t so vibrant you can see it through your clothes.

2. Do: Wear the Right Fit

Don’t worry if you’re an apple, or triangle, or pear or hourglass. Your body type shouldn’t dictate what you decide to wear. (And pro tip: it actually doesn’t matter when it comes to fashion.)

What matters is that you wear the right fit. Your clothes shouldn’t be too tight – they’ll look uncomfortable and they can hurt. But they shouldn’t be too loose, either. Loose clothing typically makes your outfit look disheveled.

But, if that’s what you’re going for, you can absolutely style loose clothing and make it look good. This comes down to intention. If you intend to style a shirt that’s three sizes too big, then make it come across in your fashion choices.

3. Don’t: Hurt Yourself With Fashion

If you’re a size 11 women’s shoe, then wear a size 11 women’s shoe. Don’t try to cram your feet into a smaller size just because you think small feet are cute. Tight shoes can cause serious foot problems like hammer toe or bunions.

Same thing with high heels. High heels come with their own set of health risks that can go all the way up your body and hurt your knees, hips, and back. They may make your butt look amazing, but you won’t have a fun night if your shoes mean you can’t shake it on the dance floor.

Do you know what’s sexy? Taking care of your health. So make sure your clothes support that goal. You should never wear anything that could put your long term health at risk.

4. Do: Include Contrast

Monochrome is a bold look and one that’s very tough to pull off. Instead, add contrasting elements in your outfit. Wear a bright top with darker jeans. Contrast a bold pattern with something simple.

Break up monochrome with pops of color or flashy accessories. It instantly makes your outfit more interesting.

5. Don’t: Look Like You’re Trying Too Hard

Hopefully, you want your look to seem natural, that kind of I-woke-up-like-this flawless. And it can be hard to get that right balance of disheveled and put-together.

When you’re trying on ten different outfits in the morning, how do you make it look like you’re not trying too hard – when you’re trying so hard?!

Trust your gut. When you’re not sure which jacket is best, just trust your gut. Do what feels comfortable for you.

Take one accessory off before you leave the house. Most likely when you’re getting ready, you’ll put on one accessory too many. The best time to spot this is when you’re about to leave. Take off that one accessory, and you should be good to go.

6. Do: Make Sure to Accessorize

A stylish necklace and earrings can class up a baggy t-shirt and rough hemmed jeans. A chic cinch belt turns a tent dress into the perfect shape flattering silhouette.

Accessories can make or break your outfit. So add a few to your outfit, but not too many.

7. Don’t: Overdo It

There are only about two styles where you can get away with wearing every piece of jewelry you own all at once – boho and punk.

If you’re going for anything in between, relax your accessories a little. Do what feels good for your style, but know that you can overdo it. As we mentioned, tone it down by taking off one accessory before you leave the house.

8. Do: Wear It Like It Isn’t Ugly

Here’s the biggest secret in fashion: it’s all about the way you wear it.

What you decide to wear can be ugly as ugly can get. But if you wear it like it isn’t ugly, then it isn’t ugly.

This comes down to your confidence and the way you decide to style your outfit. What could clash becomes bold. What’s out of fashion becomes vintage. What contrasts becomes esoteric.

If you like an outfit or a garment, it doesn’t matter what the rest of the world thinks about it. Wear it with confidence, and the world will call you a trendsetter.

Fashion Is What You Make It

The truth is, all fashion rules have really been thrown out the window. Go ahead and ignore rules like don’t wear white after labor day, or don’t mix two bold patterns.

Instead, pay attention to fit, comfort, and confidence. If it fits well, it will look good. If it’s comfortable, you’ll wear it often and you’ll feel good in it. If you’re confident in the way you carry yourself, anything looks good.
